Hays students shine at state academic meet

Fort Worth — Hays County students were among the top writers, geographers, listeners and music students in the state at the Private Schools Interscholastic Association (PSIA) meet held last weekend at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.


A total of seven private school and homeschool students from Hays County qualified for the state academic meet. Three of those students brought home medals in four events.

Eighth-grade homeschooler Demi Floria of Kyle placed third in Ready Writing and fourth in Listening Skills. This was Demi's fifth year to qualify for the state meet and her second time to medal in those two events. Frank Linam of Wimberley, an eighth grader at Hill Country Christian School, placed sixth in Maps, Graphs, and Charts.


Frank, also a five-year qualifier, also competed in Mathematics and Number Sense at the state meet. Alana Rainosek, a fifth-grade homeschooler from San Marcos, placed third in Music Memory. She also participated in the Poetry Interpretation contest in Fort Worth.

Three other Hill Country Christian School students competed in their first state PSIA meet. First-grader Camille Davis participated in Story-telling, sixth-grader Aviana Burkepile qualified in Music Memory, and fourth-grader Nicholas Foster of New Braunfels competed in Maps, Graphs, and Charts.

Third-grade homeschooler Layla Rainosek of San Marcos also competed in Poetry Interpretation and Ready Writing.

The goals of PSIA are to motivate students to find new excitement in learning, achieve a higher mastery level and receive recognition /awards for academic excellence. PSIA is open to private- or homeschooled-students in grades 1 though 8 and offers 19 different academic contest areas.


More than 1,200 students qualified for the Class “A” state meet held at TCU on May 1 by placing first or second in their contest area at one of 14 district meets held around the state.

In addition to the students advancing to the state meet, Hays county students received recognition for placing at their district contests earlier this spring. From Hill Country Christian School, Alex Shaw placed 3rd in Storytelling, Baycee Reed placed 5th in Music Memory and 6th in On-site Drawing, Briscoe Swisher placed 4th in Number Sense and 5th in Maps, Graphs, and Charts, Brooke Hart placed 4th in Music Memory, Collin Hart placed 3rd in Music Memory, Evan Shaw placed 6th in Maps, Graphs, and Charts, Kendra Patch placed 3rd in Poetry Interpretation, Madi Hall placed 6th in Poetry, Nicholas Foster placed 1st in Dictionary Skills, and Ragen Colley placed 1st in Listening Skills and 5th in Ready Writing.

From the Floria Homeschool, Lyric Floria placed 4th in Ready Writing and Demi Floria placed 3rd in Poetry Interpretation. From the Rainosek Homeschool, Layla Rainosek placed 3rd in Music Memory.
